CLOUT SURVEY

We are reaching out to seek your support in bringing back Clout Archery at the national level and working towards achieving national records in this discipline. Clout has a rich history within Archery Australia and has played a significant role in our sport’s heritage. Unfortunately, it has recently been dropped from the National Championships.

Penrith City Archers is actively advocating for the reinstatement of Clout Archery in both the Senior and Youth National Championships. We believe that reintroducing this discipline will enrich our competition offerings and honor the traditions of our sport.

Your feedback is vital in demonstrating the community’s interest and support for the return of Clout Archery to the national stage. We will be working with ArcheryNSW to present a proposal to the Archery Australia Board for its reinstatement. To advance this initiative, we are requesting your support.

Thank you for your continued support of archery in Australia. Together, we can help preserve and promote the diverse disciplines within our sport.

Clout archery, a longstanding tradition at Penrith City Archers, entails shooting arrows at the ground from distances ranging from 100 meters to 180 meters. This lesser-known form of archery is open to all participants.

Various shooting distances are established, allowing each archer to select their preferred distance, though only specific combinations of age class, gender, bow division, and distance are recognized for record purposes.

A single clout target may accommodate archers shooting from different distances. Shooting lines are designated for each distance, with staggered shooting times to ensure safety. All archers shoot simultaneously.

Each clout consists of a point-down triangular structure, typically constructed from laminated cardboard to prevent arrows from passing through, measuring up to 45cm in height and 35cm in width at its base, mounted on an appropriate pole (such as softwood). The base of the clout is positioned 8cm above the ground. Small flags are placed at 1.5-meter intervals on either side of the clout, indicating the boundaries of the even-numbered scoring zones. These flags are coloured gold, red, blue, black, and white, replicating the colours of an archery target.

Shooting is conducted in one direction (typically southward).

Points are awarded based on the scoring zone where each arrow lands. Scoring zones are defined by maximum radii from the flagpole, with ten zones in clout archery. Zones may be marked on the ground, but only the scoring zones indicated on the rope or chain are used for official scoring.
